“But if it’s true that a single human sacrifice can get this crazy weather back to normal, then I’m all for it. Who wouldn’t be?” (129–30). This volume raises the question that will most challenge the reader (viewer) at the end of the story. Suga’s blatant formulation feels ugly—but I think it’s what we all struggle with. How much are we willing to sacrifice something good in order to gain a feeling of control over our surroundings? As long as I get stability and peace of mind, does it matter if someone else has to suffer, especially if they’re willing to do so on my behalf? It’s such an interesting point in this story, because as I see it, on the one hand it’s a terrible thing to believe. No, we vehemently say, of course we wouldn’t sacrifice something innocent just for our own personal security and control! And it’s right to say that. But then on the other hand, as a Christian I affirm that that’s exactly what Jesus was for me: the innocent sacrifice that confronted the elements and guaranteed my abundant life. This is quite a lot to ponder, especially in an animated film/graphic novel.

I'd still believe that this movie has a strong messaging, but the delivery wasn't good because the subplots and other themes were all over the place. However, this film became a catalyst to hone Makoto Shinkai's scriptwriting and storyboarding to produce an adventure anime called Suzume no Tojimari. Now, I have to look for the part 1 and 3 of this book. Bitin!

This 2nd volume was almost more enjoyable than the first one I feel like we were able to delve deeper into who the characters really are other than the mc and honestly rereading this story I forgot how sad some parts are and it’s so real and beautiful and I’m loving it 4.6

I recently managed to pick up the second and third books in the Weathering With You manga and decided to carry on with the series as part of my Spoopathon TBR. I love both the Weathering With You and Your Name films by Makoto Shinkai and I love finding out how they translate to manga and light novels. This volume is the middle in the series of just 3 books and encompasses the sadder part of the story. I couldn’t help but find myself a little emotional at the end! If I’d have been reading this story for the first time without knowing the story prior to reading, I imagine I wouldn’t have been able to put this one down and it does end on such a cliffhanger! Again, I love the artwork but it does work so well for the manga as it reflects the anime so well. Although it is naturally difficult for me to judge this one as I love the film so much, it will always hold a special place in my heart. ★★★★★ -Beth May your shelves forever overflow with books! ☽

Be careful on what you wish for The Sunshine Girl business is doing great but Hina has been paying her own price unbeknown to Hodaka or her brother Nagi. Now taking one last job the decisions of the past are starting to catch up on the trio and those that have become a part of their lives. Choosing freedom and to run away they decide to flee from the past but somethings cannot be cast off as Hina opens up to Hodaka at last. Part two of three brings us up to Hina's birthday and her revelation to Hodaka for those who have seen the movie and are curious where the manga is in relation to it. As such we see Hina and Nagi's past in chapter 5 with a nice color page spread as we are introduced to their mother and the motivation to how Hina becomes a sunshine girl though it was by accident. The answers to what one is willing to sacrifice is coming in the next and final volume of the series so I hope everyone sticks around to the end.

Just watch the movie to be swept away by the artistry. Or buy the manga to display. Because really as a story, it's more of a concept than an actual plot. So many plot armors to drive the story forward that Shinkai wants to tell. No matter how unbelievable the circumstances are. For example: a kid without any special talents or pre-planning just waltzing out from a police station to escape. Nobody dies when they should have because death exists in this but the characters are NPCs with unkillable tag. The story actually doesn't go anywhere. The issue was still unresolved. There are plot holes that are never given light. And the main characters are card board cutouts. So just watch the movie. The Shinkai movie sheen will be enough to distract you from how mediocre the story actually is.

4.5/5 Stars: ‘Weathering With You’ (Book #2 of ‘Weathering With You’) by Makoto Shinkai. In-depth Rating: General Comments: An emotionally vibrant fantasy and an excellent portrait of Tokyo, Japan. The art, made more alluring by an eerie, constant rainfall, is crammed with raw emotion. Loss and the urgency of life becomes the main theme as the reader begins to learn more about the cast of the main characters. It is a slow, otherworldly transformation of mystery and magical realism. Favourite Quote: ‘That drop is a raindrop and a teardrop. At first glance, neither one seems like a good thing, but they’re not just bad things, either are they? Tears aren’t for only when you’re sad. And in dry weather, rain is a blessing. May you never be so blinded by sadness that you lose sight of what’s really important.’ Time Read: One Day.

With Vol.2, the saga of the gentle Sunshine Girl, Hina continues. The more she uses her powers to quell the unending deluge in Tokyo, the greater is the toll that it takes on her. She is slowly fading away and it won’t be long before she is will disappear completely into the sky. As her friend Hodako sees the vulnerability and the possible outcome that is the lot of the Weather Maidens, he also has deal with the danger of his past catching up with him. This is a very sentimental and melancholic instalment as we get a glimpse into Hina’s backstory and understand the loneliness that hovers around all the main characters. Beautifully drawn, it draws you in yet again and all you want is for the youngsters to have a happy ending.

This is the second volume in the Weathering with You trilogy. I picked up these books at the library on a whim, and later found out there’s a movie. (I’m reading all of the manga before seeing the movie.) Picking up from volume 1, you could tell that the storyline was going to get much more complicated and dark. This volume does not disappoint in that regard. Without spoiling anything, I found myself gasping a few times during this volume. Great progression of the plot. I’m looking forward to wrapping everything up in the next volume.

*I've decided I won't write long book reviews for books under two stars unless it's a rant or I have a lot to say!* While I enjoyed the vision of volume two, I didn't like this volume nearly as much as the first one. I enjoyed learning more about Kei (Suga), because this added another layer to his character. I enjoyed learning about the other characters like Natsumi, Hina, and Hodaka. Hodaka's personality is really shrouded in mystery; I hope for things to be cleared up soon. I honestly don't have a lot to say about this volume. I thought the art was pretty, but I didn't feel connected to the story or characters.

When Hina finds out about the darker parts of her power, she struggles with the dawning realisation that falls upon her as a heavy burden. A malicious and unforgiving storm strikes the people of Japan, and there will be only one way to stop it. The police are searching for Hodaka because he is a runaway seen carrying a firearm. Hodaka's wanted by the police, and this could mess things up. Keisuke Suga's situation will only get worse if it is found that he is hiding Hodaka. Now Hodaka is uprooted from the part of his life he had just settled into. Will he weather the storm with Hina? Or flee back to his home where he left and has no hope of returning?

I knew this was going to make me cry at some point, and we've definitely hit it. Hina is such a joy, and this definitely showcases the middle of the journey here, the part that makes me actually want to sob every single time I think about it. This one's gonna hurt, and I'm here for the ride of volume three. It definitely suffers a little for being the middle book, but I wouldn't say that's a bad thing, just unfortunate. There's a lot of build-up with no descent yet, but that's just because we're looking at the middle of the movie where the resolution hasn't hit.
